Hong Kong Pavilion
London Design Biennale 2018
Responding to the 2018 London Design Biennale theme of ‘Emotional States’, the Hong Kong pavilion engaged visitors in an olfactory encounter with metaphysical memories of Hong Kong – a spatial design exploration of immersive visual intensity and the emotive links between time, space, presence and sense of smell.
This sensory installation balances the bold visual punch of pop art with intimate moments of engagement, as guests lean in to activate scents. Exploring Hong Kong as a ‘place of memory,’ the project uses smell to evoke personal and collective nostalgia—drawing from everyday spirituality, food culture, and echoes of colonial history.
Brand marketing and PR executed as part of launch and promotions strategy include partnerships and activities with the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office, Beatrix Ong, and the BBC.
Successfully secured earned media value of £115,000 to £235,000+ in organic content and reach from global publishers and collaborators, across digital and print.
